The elastic is stretched DIAGONALLY.. so I really do have to take it out before I eat. And I have to change it everyday, the ortho gave me a packet of elastics hehe 
To make you have an idea of how small the elastic is when not stretched, try to imagine a HOLE PUNCHER, like the one we use for portfolios and other times when we need to punch a hole in paper. The size of the hole is also how big the unstretched elastic is. So you can probably guess how hard it is to stretch it across my mouth.
