i have to agree with you! 
I've read that manga during my high school days, i guess i was second year highschool then. It was indeed a good anime/manga. .
maybe the reason why he likes it so much is because of its story.. The manga/ anime is all about musicians... The male protagonist there plays piano and he himself is a pianist right?
I think he can kinda relate to the story..
